Pretend Training, Staining and a Duathlon

You know how sometimes when you let something go for so long, it feels awkward to come back? Kind of how I felt about blogging today! Things have been such a whirlwind that it was like calling someone back after the first date….but having waited 2 weeks.

So much going on, but also a mix of boring content….so I thought I would just throw out some of the fun things…..

About 2 weeks ago, I decided to train for an olymipic distance duathlon. Let’s put it this way, I was severely under-trained! ha!

It meant some time in the basement where I proceeded to take gross pictures of my sweaty hair and send them to Ken. He loves me still, mostly πŸ˜‰

IMG_6855

Because I was trying to cram a lot of intensity into a short time, my legs HATED me. To the point where I looked forward to an ice bath. I forgot just how cold they are….

IMG_6856

We did some other things too….

Like babysit this 9 week old little dude. I cant even. His face.

IMG_6875

IMG_6881

Worn out.

IMG_6884

IMG_6894

Brooke got to play some more golf…the best.

IMG_6895

And I spent the majority of the last week stainingΒ  the ceiling and beams/posts on the front deck. Talk about sore! My legs and arms killed from all the ladder time. Perfect for training, I’m sure.

IMG_6905

Brooke is always a rockstar when I am doing projects and I found a lot of pics on my phone of her antics.

IMG_6909

I was just impressed that I could figure out the ladder (only dropped it on my forearm once!).

IMG_6910

Managed a couple of outside rides.

IMG_6912

Did some “back to ‘home school'” shopping!

IMG_6916

Harvested our beets. Impressive, right?!

IMG_6919

Then this past weekend Errin and Colin were here to race! The kitties came too and took care of all the moths/flies they could find in the house!

IMG_6953

Saturday we were up around 5:30 to get E, C and Ken on their way to race the Stinger. Brooke and I went in a little later to spectate. Poor Colin had a mechanical issue and didnt end up on the course until over an hour after the start. Errin had a great lap and PR’ed the course in under 3 hours! Ken finished off in a sprint and ended up in 6th for the day in the Pro race. His best finish to date!

We spent the rest of the day relaxing before calling it a super early night!

Sunday morning…ugh…Ken and I woke up to an alarm at 2:40. Did you know that was even possible?!

Ken was working the triathlon and had to be there at 3:45 to prep. It was rough, but nice to ride together. Since Errin and Colin were at our house, Brooke had someone to wake up to and it made it all possible!

We got to the venue at 3:45 am and Ken got to work. I got to lay in the truck and close my eyes for a bit. While I didnt actually fall asleep, it was better than being outside working!

Around 5:45, I got out and dressed and then helped with packet handout. Since I was busy, there wasn’t even an opportunity to get nervous for the race.

At 8, we lined up (it was a small field for the duathlon) and we were off!

The 5k was nice and cool and we went out really fast. It was WAY faster than I should have gone out, but I was excited to stay with the lead group. I was at a 7:40 min/mile pace for that first 3.1 miles! Really good when you havent done any speed work over the summer πŸ˜‰

The bike was my favorite part (shocker). While first place was way off the front, I ended up heading out in 3rd position. I passed a girl who I knew was a really strong runner within the first 100 feet and then was passed by a legit looking lady on a full blown tri-bike. Super aero. Much more than my cyclocross bike with 28s on it. I went pretty hard on the bike (saw Ken on the course!!) in order to put in a gap on the girl who I knew would kick my butt on the run!

Returned from the ride and threw my running shoes back on. I made it exactly 1.05 miles before my legs started cramping…bad. Maybe that is why you actually do “brick” workouts in training. My legs were not exactly sure what was happy or why I wanted to kill them. The rest of the 10k became a run/walk to make sure that I actually made it….I have never wanted to quit a race that bad in my life!

The strong runner girl was putting some time into me so I was very conscious of whether or not I could see her! I kept it together enough to get through the finish line in 3rd place!

IMG_6963

Turns out that the woman in first is super fast and actually travels internationally to race dualthons. No biggie.

IMG_1606

IMG_1608

I was pretty excited with that result given the lack of training!! It was one of the hardest races I have done….super fun, but physically and mentally super hard! Maybe I will try it again on some actual training πŸ˜‰

Yesterday, we got some interesting news about Ken’s company. It will be moving to Denver next summer…..so many decisions in our future :/

Single Parent Life.

Hi there! Not sure where the last 5 days went, but here we are! We have had some random happenings, but mostly we have been hanging out doing the summer things!

Last Wednesday, Brooke and I put on real clothes and headed in to Smartwool for a send off party. It is the 12th year that they have had a big bike ride to the Outdoor Retailers trade show. It used to be in Salt Lake, but is now in Denver. Much closer to home!

I even did my hair. Gasp.

IMG_6754

Seriously, she is always show stopping!

IMG_6758

Brooke enjoyed an evening playing with a bunch of kiddos!

The next morning, we dropped Ken off around 7:30 and then decided to play in town for a bit.

Went for a little ride (I ran).

IMG_6761

Stopped at the park.

IMG_6763

IMG_6764

And climbed on some statues.

IMG_6767

I turned it into an extra workout and did box jumps onto one. Perfectly normal.

IMG_6768

Hit up the pool and grocery and all those fun things!

Brooke has been making sure that Jasper gets a workout too.

IMG_6776

Friday we were home and reorganized Brooke’s closet, drawers, etc. Dream big.

Saturday was more exciting. Brooke wanted to go golfing so we ventured to the 9 am class. Girl LOVES it.

IMG_6785

Went to the Farmer’s Market to hang out with the goats.

IMG_6788

Enjoyed a relaxing afternoon.

Sunday morning started off with a bang. Literally. Ugh. Silly bird.

IMG_6792

Brooke: Uh, yeah, pretty sure it’s dead.

Perfect.

IMG_6793

We will just look at the sky instead.

IMG_6794

Went to church and left a little early to make it to Craig to sell a guy some tires. Ha. Our “let’s meet at 12” turned into 3 pm. Thanks dude. (It was a much more involved story that included my mom hacking into Ken’s Facebook account to try to message this guy…eventually we found him.)

At least we found some toys and hung out at the park.

Much needed when we got home.

IMG_6799

Did a lot of chores today (fun fact: I have been on the trainer the last 3 nights and I may pull out my hair). Must run outside tomorrowwwwwww.

Brooke got serious with a photo shoot for her bath toys. I dont even ask.

IMG_6813

Missing Ken but really excited to see him soooon!!!

Not only did they ride to Boulder last week, but he added in a team race on Saturday (96 miles and 12,000+ feet of climbing). His team won-group of 4 that all ride the whole thing together. He is insane. Between Thursday and Sunday he was at something like 335 miles and 21 hours on the bike. No biggie.

And that’s about it! Looking forward to some fun things tomorrow!

The Dead Swede (the name of the race!)

Hey there! How are you?? Time for another weekly round up?! I seriously do not know what happens to the weeks. They just vanish in the summer.

Last week was a lot of the usual. Workouts (running and riding), yard work, prepping for the class I will be teaching online, pool time, etc.

On Thursday, I was preparing for our trip to Sheridan, Wyoming. Brooke took that to mean: put on random clothes and get in a weight workout. Girl is crazy! Side note: I cannot believe that she will be 5 in a week?!

IMG_6104

A lot goes into race trips and Brooke always makes things a bit more exciting πŸ˜‰

Friday morning started out with rides for both Ken and I -we have so many awesome roads to choose from. Cant beat that!

IMG_6109

We loaded up the truck and trailer and hit the road by 9:15 am. Took most of the day to get there, but we made sure to stop for a hike to the top of a rock mountain in 50 mph winds. It was a little scary on top and we didnt stay long! Super cool though!

On Saturday, we were up nice and early for Ken’s 7 am start. Brooke actually slept through most of his prep (laying right next to him?!) and Ken even gave me coffee and breakfast in bed!

Ken rode to the start (1.8 miles from our camp spot) and Brooke and I got things together before getting on the road for our support duties. We ended up getting lost a bit but caught him at the second aid station before he started climbing.

And climb they did! I kid you not, I LOVE to go uphill on my bike. Love it. Not so much the downhill, but I LOVE the uphill. This, my friends, was insane. It was about 20 miles of climbing or something crazy. We are talking some gnar sections of rocks and 19% grades.

IMG_6112

I was in 4 wheel drive for parts of it in the F-250.

IMG_0836

IMG_0840

IMG_0844

Ken ended up not needing anything from us, but it was worth the experience and the views were incredible.

Another side note: I know that my husband is an incredible athlete, but I was BLOWN away by his ride. He is 6 foot 4 inches (not your typical tiny climber) and he was right there with the guy that we were nervous about getting away on the climb. RIGHT THERE and looking insanely strong. I was so impressed.

After seeing Ken, we headed back down the mountain. This was a bit stressful as I was driving a rather large vehicle with other cars coming up, a ton of cyclists coming up and then my husband FLIES by me on the outside heading down. I had a small heart attack. At least I was ready when second came up a few minutes later, but good grief. He went down that mountain like a mad man! And we are not talking paved roads, they are gravel/rock/sand….wow.

The rest of the day was a series of rolling hills. We caught up with Ken at the next aid station and gave him a sandwich, bottles, etc. Then he set out on his way. We aimed to follow him, but the road got a bit soft and I did not want to spend the day digging out the truck. We turned around and tried to follow the map to another point to meet him.

He actually called us a bit later to say he hoped we didnt get stuck and was happy to hear we made better choices πŸ˜‰ We tried to meet him at mile 90 but we were not informed that there was rerouting that morning and ended up on the original course with a fellow supporter. They still had signage out there, so it was a shock to us when Ken called from the finish line. oops.

He won by over 13 minutes on second and then more and more time on the others. It was a successful day for him on the bike and we couldnt be more proud! I even got to sneak out for 25 mile ride after he was done!

IMG_6203

Nothing says gravel racing like winning a weapon, right?

IMG_6207

Working on her break-dance moves.

IMG_6210

After the awards, we actually hooked up the trailer and headed for Casper. We were hoping to take a few hours off the trip for Sunday to enjoy the afternoon at home. Not a bad morning view, either.

IMG_0852

IMG_0855

IMG_0861

IMG_0869

Once home, we did some chores and I got out for just over an hour of riding. Quick hot tub, worked on Ken’s legs and called it a night!

Monday was filled with mowing. And dance class. And really that was it.

This morning, we had to drop Ken off in town, so we made the most of it and took Brooke’s bike. We got in 3 miles (I got to run with her!) and it was awesome! Girl did so good! Excited for more of this!

IMG_6228

When we got home, it was time to set free the butterflies that Brooke raised. It was really cool and we were so happy they all made it.

IMG_6235

IMG_6242

IMG_6246

Brooke then proceeded to destroy the living room and dress like a mermaid. Perfectly normal.

IMG_6254

And that is another week in our lives! Hope that you had a great week and have lots of fun things coming up! We have company coming this weekend and we cant wait!
