A 50 Mile Race, a 2 Week Road Trip and the Zoo

Hi there!

Before I jump in here, I just wanted to let you know that it snowed here today. So there’s that.

Second, this post contains an overwhelming amount of pictures. Apparently when you have time to jot things down once a month, they build up.

So, let’s talk about how the end of the summer went, shall we?

After the whirlwind that was August, things settled down just a little bit leading into Run Rabbit Run. The night before the race, I found myself sitting at the pre-race meeting listening to the race directors give us a rundown on what to expect. Yes, they were indeed wearing bunny ears. Totally normal.

IMG_0780

I went into the race with little expectation. Having trained for 8 weeks (with a week of that missed due to the craziness of the bike race) I was really just aiming to finish. The race started at 6:30 am in the dark and it was pretty chilly. The 4 am wake up call left plenty of time to eat and digest and then drive into town. Having never done anything like it, I started at the back of the pack. Probably next time I would start a bit farther up. I spent the first 1/2 mile passing people in the dark (with a headlamp).

The first 6.4 miles were pretty much straight up the ski mountain (3600 feet of elevation gain-there was about 8,000 total over the course of the day). It was primarily fast hiking and enjoying the incredible moon set/sunrise. People were relaxed and chatty. Nervous energy 😉 Once we reached the top, we actually got to start running! It was gorgeous and some super fun single track. Miles 6.5-18 seemed to fly by! The aid stations and volunteers were amazing.

There was a good amount of “rolling hills” throughout the course, but one of the most exciting climbs happened around mile 24. We hiked up a very steep climb to the Rabbit Ears. And then we climbed ONTO the Rabbit Ear. That was the turn around point and we were headed straight back down! Not sure which was harder-the up or the down on that steep section.

From the turn around point, I felt pretty good! Kept the running up and rolled through mile after mile. Around Mile 36, my right foot started bothering me, but what are you going to do? I stopped and emptied some dirt out of my shoes, but probably could have loosened my shoes a bit. There was a lot of hiking on the way back up intermixed with running on the flats and descents.

My watched died at Mile 47 and just after that myself and a group of guys were stopped by two bull moose on the trail. They were in no hurry to get out of our way either. About 7-8 minutes later, we were finally able to pass and keep heading down the mountain. I rolled through the finish at just over 11 hours and 7 minutes (silly moose-probably could have been in the 10s!). I ran through the finish with a smile on my face and was so happy to have Ken and Brooke cheering there! My expectations were far exceeded for the day! Ended up 4th in my age group, 10th overall female and 33rd overall out of the 148 finishers. And guess what, I LOVED it! It was so much fun!

IMG_2565

Post race I expected to need Ken to carry me to the car but I felt surprisingly good! My right foot hurt (and was actually bruised by that evening). Better figure that out for next time 😉 But overall, I was still functioning!

IMG_0794

I happily joined the fam in the hot tub afterwards before packing things up to leave the next morning!

We then embarked on a two week road trip! Nothing like jumping in the car right after a race 🙂

First stop was Jackson Lake where we met up with GrandBob and Nene for some camping (we pulled our trailer for the whole trip and it was awesome!).

We had an amazing afternoon on the boat and then fun in some stormy looking weather the next day! Sure made for some pretty pics!

IMG_0800

It was so good to sit and relax for a bit! Moving was a bit rough for those 3 days (luckily by Wednesday I could move pretty normally!). My feet were really the part that suffered the most. Shoes were not exactly comfortable so I spent some quality time in flip flops!

Someone is a HUGE fan of camping. And then sleeping it off 😉

IMG_0810

After a couple of days in Wyoming, we continued our trip. We exited via Yellowstone and happened to hit Old Faithful right as it was going off! That was a win!

IMG_0816

IMG_0817

Brooke took this pic of the buffalo in the road.

IMG_0850

We ventured through Idaho and into Oregon. They have some awesome clouds there! 😉

IMG_0884

IMG_0887

Random road snack: Found these at Costco and they were pretty delicious.

IMG_0890

Driving along the Columbia River was pretty spectacular.

We spent a day hanging out at Hood River. It was so fun to watch the kite-boarders out on the water. I half expected Ken to jump in and try his hand at it fully clothed.

IMG_0894

IMG_0896

We then made our way to the coast and spent some time in Tillamook. PS-the Tillamook Forest is amazing and so dense! Very different than the forests of Colorado. A lot more moss, too.

The beaches of Oregon stole my heart. Quiet, dog friendly, moody….loved them!

IMG_0909

Brooke got freaked out by all of the Tsunami warning signs along the drive which ended up in some meltdowns about beach safety. We finally convinced her that it wasn’t tsunami season (parenting at its finest) and were pretty good for the rest of the trip.

IMG_0910

We had so much fun exploring the Tillamook Factory!

IMG_0918

IMG_0924

The food was delicious…and I mean, the ice cream. No words.

IMG_0925

IMG_0928

Soaking up more sand.

IMG_0931

And grabbing a nap on the way to visit my sister and brother-in-law!

IMG_0934

He made himself right at home.

IMG_0936

We had so much fun hanging out with Alle and David. They took us apple picking, wine tasting, Ken went on a salmon fishing trip with David and the girls went bowling (Brooke’s first time!). We fit a ton into a couple of days!

IMG_0954

Saw some slugs.

IMG_0959

Game face.

IMG_0963

Oh, chopped my hair off too.

IMG_0966

On Tuesday morning, we headed back for some more time at the beach. We had a gorgeous day!

IMG_0970

IMG_0973

IMG_0975

Even got in a ride (there was very little exercising on the trip and my body was fine with that!)

IMG_0976

Brooke found a new favorite shirt.

IMG_0981

We convinced Brooke to go on a hike with us. It was 3.6 miles and she did a solid 3 of those (Ken gave her a ride on sections on the way back up). It was GORGEOUS!

Explored the coast and checked out the Cape Meares Lighthouse. Found some amazing fish n chips, too!

IMG_0983

IMG_0984

IMG_0986

And then we went back for more ice cream.

IMG_0989

After an amazing trip, we made our way back home! Ken was a rock star and did all the driving. I did all the snack handing. Perfect relationship! Ha.

We arrived home to the colors of Fall. Always spectacular.

IMG_0996

Ken had to run down to Denver so we talked him into dropping us at the Zoo while he ran his errands. It was so much fun. We even got to see baby Tatu who was introduced to the public just a couple of days before!

IMG_1022

IMG_1024

IMG_1030

IMG_1037

I guess he likes her!

IMG_1045

The next day we had a Homeschool Group event and enjoyed an awesome hike with our friends.

IMG_1051

IMG_1053

IMG_1061

And just like that…

IMG_1113 (1)

We woke up to a few inches of snow and it is currently 15 degrees headed to a low of 4 tonight. Thankfully, we are supposed to be back to our regularly scheduled Fall in a day or two! Not quite ready for this!

And there we have it! Practically a book so congratulations if you made it this far!

Workout wise, things have been a bit slow. Still working on getting the tendons on the top of my right foot to come around. Haven’t had much time to fit in rides. BUT we have made it to the gym/pool a few times to get in some good weight workouts! Already plotting plans for 2020 with some new goals. Since I cant choose between running and riding, there is a goal for each. While next year wont be the year for it, I am now 100 mile ultra running curious. Maybe after I check a couple more things off I will dive into that realm in the next couple of years 🙂

Hope you are enjoying a less snowy Fall where you are! See you again soon!

Girls Weekend, A Race and New Dance Class

Why, yes. I did fall off the face of the Earth. But, I’m back!

Last weekend I had an awesome Girl’s trip with my mom and sister in Portland, Oregon. Alle moved there a few months ago and we were finally able to meet up and see her new digs. Let’s rewind and share some of the fun!

On Friday, Ken and Brooke dropped me off at the airport around 6:50 am and then continued on to Wyoming to hang out with Ken’s parents for the weekend! Safety in (adult) numbers, right Ken? 😉

IMG_5685

After a layover in Denver, I made it to Portland and was swooped up at airport and taken to a giant waterfall. I mean, does it get better than that?!

IMG_5690

Oregon was absolutely gorgeous! So so green and waterfalls everywhere you looked.

IMG_0744

IMG_4756 (1)

Alle was well prepared and brought about 4 extra rain coats for me to choose from. Turns out is rains off and on, but actually way less than I expected.

IMG_0749

IMG_0758

After visiting the waterfall, we drove down to Hood River for some Brewery time. We sampled some of the local beer and played on the riverside for a bit.

IMG_0763

IMG_0764

Since I was missing the kiddo, we made sure to hit up the park and get in some quality playtime!

IMG_0772

After a quick stop at one of the coolest grocery stores that I have been to, a couple of Alle’s friends came over for dinner…and so my Mom and I could meet Ben. Oh my gosh. Look at that face. He was the sweetest little 2.5 year old Vizsla and I could not get enough!

IMG_5693

PS…Alle’s house is the absolute cutest. She has such a talent for decorating!

Saturday morning started off with a walk to the most delicious French themed restaurant. I gained 4 pounds just by walking in the door!

IMG_5696

We started with a “sipping chocolate” taster. Absolutely divine.

IMG_5697

My taste buds can barely look at the pictures.

IMG_5698

Crepes

Northwest Salmon Hash

IMG_5700

Banana French Toast.

IMG_5701

Good thing I brought my stretchy pants!

After breakfast, we got dressed and headed out for the day’s activities-wine tasting!

IMG_5702

It was a gorgeous day! Alle is well versed in the wineries around them and is a member at a couple, so we spent the day exploring and drinking delicious wines!

IMG_0777

IMG_0779

IMG_0775

Let’s put it this way….I am a total lightweight when it comes to drinking, so I was having a GREAT time all day. Ha!

By the end of the third winery, we were all happy to head back to the house and put on pajamas, order a pizza and watch Pitch Perfect 3! (And cuddle with Elsa, of course)

IMG_5707 (1)

She has a thing for my Mom!

IMG_5710

Perfectly normal for a Girl’s weekend!

IMG_5711

And then we were quick into bed!

Sunday morning started early! We got up, Alle made breakfast and we headed downtown for a little half marathon. Fun fact: My knee started bothering me again the previous Wednesday, so I didnt run for the 3 days leading up to the race. Well rested or flat…..or hungover 😉

We were there in plenty of time, warmed up and ready to go by the 7:30 start time. Unfortunately, they kept pushing the race back due to logistic issues and we didnt start until almost 8. So much for warming up!

We did the Rip City Race for the Roses Half Marathon.

IMG_4757

I started out a bit too fast (and paid for it later) but felt good in the lower altitude. The weather predicted rain, but we did not have any during the actual race (it waited until after). While the course was not my favorite (lots of random street out and backs) it was fun to go fast! We went over an awesome bridge to cross the river twice. That was really cool. I got to see Alle 3 times as we passed on the out and backs. My goal was to break 1:45. I ended up finishing in 1:43:06!! The course was actually a bit long….I had 13.29 miles instead of 13.1. I know that watches sometimes get crazy in the buildings, but Alle’s said the same thing. It could have been that we had to weave through most of the 5k race field…but according to my watch, I ran the 13.1 in closer to 1:41 and change and around a 7:45 pace. I will take it, especially after a full day of wine tasting! It was good enough for 3rd in my age group and 8th overall woman!

Once I finished, I started cramping like crazy (thanks to never running on pavement and then jumping on it for 13 miles. Ugh.). My Mom had met me and we walked down towards the bottom of the final hill and then I ran it again with Alle. She did awesome (she ran an full in March and has not really run since). She finished just over 2 hours for the long course.

IMG_4775

Pretty sure we are both talking in this picture!

IMG_4776 (1)

I hit a pretty nice wall around mile 9 and things went a bit south from there 😉

IMG_5713

We spent the rest of Sunday exploring downtown and eating the most delicious ice cream! Did a little shopping before heading home to sit in the hot tub for a bit! The best!

We did manage to get it together and go out for a light and delicious dinner. I dont need to eat for about a month now.

Monday morning, we were up and packing before heading to Blue Star for donuts. So good!!

IMG_5739

Alle was kind enough to set me up with a hair appt and I got my hair cut (nicely) for the first time in about 3 years. Priorities. haha.

Post haircut, we headed to the airport and my Mom and I began our travel days home! It was quite bumpy , but we made it and I was really happy to see my little family at the airport around 8 pm!

By Tuesday, it was back to reality!

IMG_5743

We ventured to town and discovered the pool was closed, so we visited the baby chicks and ducks instead!

IMG_5746

IMG_5747

There is a new baby horse in our neighborhood!

IMG_5750

And we also spotted a camel. No idea on that one!

IMG_5749

At 5, Brooke had an intro into her new dance class. She was pretty excited about it. Especially since her little bestie is in her class too!

IMG_5752

IMG_5753

And that about wraps up all of the excitement!

My legs have been happy to have a few days off and now I have to figure out what is next on the racing agenda! For now, I will be happy to play with my bikes for a bit 😉

Hope you had a wonderful weekend (and week?!) as well!!

Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday…
