Costco, Rest week, Still winter

Last Monday, Brooke (Jasper-because he doesnt like to be left out) and I made the journey to Costco. Costco used to be a weekly thing for us, but since we live about 2 hours aways now, we try to hit it up every 2-3 months or so (or if we happen to be down on the Front Range!). We did some damage (thankfully it only happens every 2 months, right?) and fitting everything in the car became a little challenging! Thank goodness for the roof box!

I ended up finding a heater for the porch and since we had the giant cooler in the back of the car, the heater had to go in the back seat. Jasper got to ride shotgun. ha.

The entire trip from leaving the driveway to everything unloaded and put away took just under 8 hours. Yes, I was exhausted! The best part is-even though it is a 2 hour trip each way, it is really the middle of nowhere. Saw maybe 10 cars on the road….on the way back we got stuck behind a farm truck and trailer and hung out around 25-30 mph for a bit. Other than that, super uneventful trip. Also, Costco is ready for summer. Just throwing that out there, Mother Nature.

Brooke ended up waking up with a fever on Tuesday that lasted for the day (thankfully it was gone the next morning) so we laid low for most of the week. She was back to her crazy self on Wednesday, but we didnt want to get anyone else sick.

Because of the weird week, I took it as a rest week. Hopped on the trainer for an hour Wed, Thurs and Friday, but no running. Went out for 4 easy miles on Saturday. They were kind of terrible. Why do rest weeks feel so hard sometimes?! It was also 12 degrees but felt like 0 because of the wind. Not super easy to run slow when all you want to do is speed up to get warm!

lOn Sunday, we headed to church before some outside playtime! It was pretty chilly (22 degrees), but we set out on cross country skis for about an hour and 15 minutes. Ken pulled Brooke in a sled (I would seriously die) and we took Jasper and neighbor dog with us. I think the pups had the BEST time of all! We quickly followed the workout up with a dunk in the hot tub 😉

I have realized that I need to throw a third day of running into my week. As I have been building miles, I can feel the fact that I need a little more spaced out run time. Soooo…this morning I jogged a whole 2 miles (before winter showed up with force-literally blowing snow-sideways). They were two easy miles that allowed me to drop a card in the mailbox while Brooke hung out playing. After grabbing a quick snack, I hopped on the trainer for an hour of base spinning while Brooke worked on Pre-school work. Going to try to fit in 20 minutes of yoga this afternoon (in between grading and emails and play dough and bathtime). Never a dull moment!

Random: Is anyone else following the Giraffe in New York? Live video feeds of a preggo giraffe. I seriously check on her too many times a day. Going to be exciting to hopefully catch the birth…or at least see the baby after!! You are welcome (for making you crazy!)

Valentine’s Play

Happy Valentine’s Day! Hope you are spending it with someone special (dogs count!).

My Valentine’s Day started out with some quality time with the husband in the basement. Sounds romantic, huh?! We did about 50 minutes on the bike trainers so we wouldn’t have to tonight 😉 Side of Covert Affairs for good measure! Seriously, cannot get enough!

Brooke and I spent some time playing outside today, because, you know, it is warm!

Seriously though, our snow is MELTING. I could ride my fat bike across the yard because it is so hard at this point!

This weekend, my in-laws were in town. Saturday I hopped on the trainer because our weather was wet-snowy. And the roads were muddy! Had no desire to recreate the crash scene from last weekend…but needed to get some alone time on the bike.

Sunday, after church, I got dropped off at the end of the dirt road and ran home (had to add a little detour to get my 12 miles). I was HANGRY by the time I made it home. Partly because I needed food and partly because Strava did this to me! (my watch said 12.01 miles. Thanks for that!)

Since the fam was heading out on Cross Country skis, I shoveled some food into my mouth and snapped mine on for 2.2 more miles and 40 minutes. Ken pulled Brooke behind him in  a sled. He is amazing!

Jasper thought it would be fun to wear my headband. Okay, he hated me for it.

Glad that I rode this morning, because Brooke and I got a little crazy with the Valentine’s business. Hello empty calories, get in my belly!!

Random side note: Tried Blue Apron!

Pros: Easy to figure out, delicious (really loved the flavors and ideas), made me excited to try new things.

Cons: Prep does NOT take the 15 minutes that it says it will! Or I just really suck at cutting things up! A bit more expensive than our usual dinners, quality seemed okay but we tend to do organic, which I do not think it is.

Spring-like? In February?

When we moved to Steamboat Springs, I figured that winters would be cold. I was mentally prepared and we have, in fact, had some super cold weeks. Temps below 0 and as low as -23 degrees. I expected snow on the ground and jackets from at least November to April. And sometimes, I think that is the case!

But….this week has been strange! We have been seeing 30 and 40 degrees with a high of 47 degrees today?! Our roads have become a muddy mess and my car is currently a new color of gross. We can see part of our gravel driveway!! And today, I was outside in a short sleeved shirt. NUTS!! img_1168

Now, most people would probably think that we are like, YEAH!!!! But in reality, it is too early. We are not ready to say goodbye to cross country skiing, snow mobiling and pow-surfing just yet! We want to keep our snow for a bit longer (yes, I realize that when it returns to sub-zero temps in a couple weeks, I will eat those words). Apparently, there are winters that end early every few years….will this be one?

Yesterday, while Brooke was at ski school, Jasper and I hit the muddy/slippery mess that was the road and then a slick trail for a 5 mile run. He had a BALL while I tried not to fall on my face. Ken raced a fat bike race last night and the conditions were a bit terrible because of the warmth. Nothing like sinking in with every pedal stroke. He killed it finishing 3rd on no training!

It was 42 degrees and I had to pull my long sleeves off so I didnt die of heat. Crazy mountain runners 😉

Today, I hopped on the trainer for an hour for some 5 minute intervals (still trying to build up to some actual intense intervals-for now I am just riding them around what my threshold was last year). I started the series The Royals. One episode in and I guess it is pretty interesting. At least it keeps my interest during the recovery time! I would have loved to have ridden outside today, but it is just too muddy right now 😦

Time to figure out dinner for the kiddo before a Blue Apron date with the husband!
